Reflections of an educating parent, now grandparent
Beverley, May 2018 I post lots of child-friendly messages about parenting and educating and just want everyone to know that when my kids were young I was just an average ordinary somewhat appalling parent that had no idea about what respecting children as people was all about, hadn't heard about attachment parenting, and generally winged it as a parent, slowly learning to listen to my heart and not my head (because the two of them were constantly arguing!) My kids grew up to be the awesome adul ts they are because they were amazingly stubborn and wouldn't budge when whatever I said or did wasn't making any sense to them. Instead of breaking their will and bending it to suit my needs I challenged my attitudes, values and beliefs and discovered that those needs weren't really my needs, just ones I'd been trained to believe were, ones meant to mold me and my children to what other people - who didn't even know us - thought we should be... My kids helped me to grow up, to discover who I was, what was important to me and why. They helped me become the parent and grandparent I am today. And they did with it unconditional love and a deep trust in me as a parent, as their parent and my ability to grow and learn. It is never too late to change doing something we've been told or trained to do, especially if it isn't working. How do we know it isn't working? If it isn't producing the results we desire. And if it isn't making our hearts sing with love and joy. If it is hurting someone. Or disrespecting someone. I am so glad my children waited patiently for me to learn how to be the parent I wanted and needed to be. Was this article helpful? Was it worth $1.00 to you? and Learning without School! We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine
