New EarthSchool

 New EarthSchool is a community resource for people who love being with children - and helping them learn about living sustainably on the Earth. I began imagining this website while home schooling my last child through her primary school years on the east coast of Australia. We spent most days on the beach, exploring the ancient rock formations, studying the local flora and fauna, and making videos.During those idyllic years I discovered my own joy in learning from the earth, and in watching my daughter discover her own interests and passions.
The home schooling years lead me to do a post graduate teaching degree, in the hope of bringing a new approach to school curricula. As a relief teacher, my most rewarding experiences have been in small rural schools, where the children and the teachers are more connected to their natural environments, and more open to new ideas.
New EarthSchool is an ongoing project, reflecting my own learning journey. I created the Fruit &Vege Learning Kit while learning to grow my own food organically. I now manage a Native Plant Nursery, and plan to add a new section to the site as I learn more about Australian bush food and medicine.
I love watching children learn! I see that each child has a natural inclination to investigate the world in ways that are unique and personally meaningful to them. They love being outside, exploring and making new discoveries. They like being together in small groups to build things, make music, create poetry, art and videos. They love games and stories. These joyful activities are their natural learning environment.
The idea behind New EarthSchool is to start locally, beginning with edible plant food in the backyard garden, exploring the surrounding community, and any wild, natural environment nearby. Learning a ctivities can include cooking, gardening, map-making, collecting data, creating art, music, dance, and multimedia, playing games, or just being outside observing the natural world.
The Lesson Ideas integrate learning outcomes from the new Australian National Curriculum.They are inquiry-based, with a focus on our interconnectedness with all life.
The Online Resources are an ongoing research project to compile the best earth-related videos and web sites.

Welcome to the World of Home Education

We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences.
