Affordable Education: Unschooling Sets Learning Free!
by Beverley Paine
An advert I saw today irritated me because it read: "even the poorest (economically) people can now afford to be educated" 15 Free Education Websites
For those of us that have been unschooling a long time statements like that are irritating: why? Because they limit the concept of education. And we unschoolers know that learning knows no limits!
Irritating because it assumes that the child without monetary means or economic stability in his life isn't receiving an education, and perhaps even assumes that he isn't even learning, because sadly the assumption is that education equates to school. We unschoolers know that this isn't true: we've set education free. And we've freed our minds from the limitations of thinking there is only way for children to learn.
We limit the education of impoverished people by assuming that they need more than what they have at their fingertips to learn: what children need most is attention from people who want to see them thrive and survive. This attention begs time more than money and educational gadgets, tools, toys and programs. We only need to do interesting and life sustaining things with our children, with our minds and hearts open, curiously observing and interacting with our communities and world, asking questions, seeking answers, exploring, discovering and imagining. This does not cost money. This costs time.
That's what we unschoolers know.

Welcome to the World of Home Education
We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine
