Using Free Resources Created by Authors
by Emily Rose, contributor to The Educating Parents Homeschooling and Unschooling
I was cruising around the Michael Morpurgo website looking for more books my 4yo might enjoy as read alouds, and came across the resources section (all free), where there are lots of activities linked for various books. Some are more extensive than others.
It reminded me that searching the authors or publishers web page is a good way to find activities and resources for book studies, if your kid is into that sort of thing.
They can be great resources as a parent, for helping to guide the types of 'deeper' questions you could ask about a book to help gauge comprehension or as a springboard for further activities.
Many of them also include 'cross curricula' activities, so you may be able to tick off art, or science for the book also.
Plus they make for pretty tidy work samples, if you wanted, or needed to keep such things.
Searching for 'Xyz book title + teachers notes' is a good way to find activities, back ground info about the book, ideas etc.
Very good sets of teachers notes will have the various curriculum standards or dot points linked, if you like that kind of information.
Here's the Michael Morpurgo website if anyone was interested in his books. We're reading Mud Puddle Farm 6 stories in 1 and my 4yo is loving them! Lots of illustrations on each page, funny/silly story lines, clean humour, just good easy stories.

Welcome to the World of Home Education
and Learning without School!
We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine
