Not only story-tellers; story makers!© Beverley Paine Nov 2004 When reading stories to my young children I'd often place them in the story by saying things like "if I was Susan there's no way I'd crawl into that hole... what about you?" We'd talk about why Susan felt the need to crawl into the hole, try to predict what was going to happen next, or what would happen is she turned tail and ran home! Make fiction come alive - you'll be surprised at how much fun reading aloud together becomes. I can't count the number of times I or my friends retell stories we've read or seen at the movies or on television. People have a huge need to tell stories. Long before humans began reading we shared our stories: the stories of our personal lives, gossip about friends, scary stories, moralistic tales... you name, we've told it! Stop and listen to a small group of children - you'll hear some amazing stories. Embellishment is creativity at work and it's magic. Never look bored when a child is retelling Harry Potter yet again... extend the story by igniting the children's imagination... "Yes, but what if, instead of..." I love the look on children's faces when they realise that not only are they story-tellers, they are also story-makers! and Learning without School! We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine
