QLD Home Education Program for a child, 12 years

J's learning program is fully individualized, and continually built upon his interests and strengths. He will be provided with a Natural Learning environment, with the constant support and guidance of his Mother, Father, and other nurturing, involved adults. He will learn through an extensive range of real-life experiences, a flexible schedule, and his individual interests and needs.

My goal for J is to continue to nurture his chosen interests, allowing him to learn at a pace that is comfortable for him. J demonstrates a higher level of confidence, and an appreciation for learning when allowed the freedom to learn, rather than being forced to, and I aim to continue providing the necessary tools and support for him to follow his passions. His interests are: reading for pleasure, designing maps for video games, reflective and creative writing, computers, Science, Art, watching movies and documentaries, board games, and playing computer/video games. He also enjoys spending time with family, going to the beach, and jumping on the trampoline.


J will continue to develop the skills of speaking, reading, listening, spelling and handwriting. He will do this through a various range of activities and resources that reflect his interests. He will read from self-chosen books on a regular basis, and be involved in reflection base pieces such as journal writing, conversations, and computer game and movie reviews, which he shows an interest in. My goal is for J to read and write for pleasure, which includes non-fiction and fiction material in his chosen area of interest, in both book and computer form, with the intention for him to gain an understanding of the information received. He will continue to develop his writing, spelling and grammar through writing letters to loved ones, designing written plans for computer games, expressing his interests in certain subjects through writing stories and lists of things he would like, playing Scrabble, making written signs to hang on his bedroom door, journal writing/scrapbooking , and editing his own work. This will also develop his ability to write creatively and passionately, as it will reflect his interests at the time. This will enable him to learn to enjoyand have a greater understanding of reading and writing. I will continue to provide guidance for any further interests he develops in this subject.


The internet, library books, bought books, scrapbooks, recipes, computer, video games, movies, a range of writing materials, magazines, board games such as Scrabble.


Playing computer games where he has to read and follow instructions and write titles and messages to friends, reading self-chosen books and discussing it, story writing, writing lists, playing Scrabble, writing letters, editing, scrapbooking, typing search engines into the computer to gather information, conversation, watching movies and documentaries.


J will continue to develop mathematical concepts and problem solving through a range of real-life, hands on activities, such as cooking, shopping, budgeting, computing, counting and board games. Materials that support his individual interests will be available for J to enhance his competency in these areas. He will assist me in the planning of the family budget, and creating his own budget based on a family outing, showing income and expenditure. He will play board games such as Monopoly, which will help him with subtraction, addition and multiplication. He will also use his own money to purchase goods, help add up the price of groceries, and practice measurement and fractions through cooking and video games. This will enable J to have a broader understanding in Math, which he can use in his day to day life. I will continue to provide guidance for any further interests he develops in this subject.


The internet, computer, video games, recipes, money, measuring equipment, board games such as Monopoly, and calculator for adding prices of groceries.


Playing computer games such as Minecraft, where he has to construct buildings using measurement, counting and problem solving, grocery shopping, planning his own budget, playing Monopoly, cooking, and purchasing goods from a store.


J will continue to develop his knowledge and passion for science through a range of hands-on, chosen activities, conversation, reading, and watching documentaries. J shows a great interest in this area, and seeks to find answers to his scientific questions. He is particularly interested in nature and astronomy, and is able to learn extensively with the resources provided. He will watch self-chosen material, then receive further emphasis on the subject, allowing him a greater understanding. His father is very educated in this area, and spends quite some time in discussion with J, providing him with much desired information. He will continue to search for images of the earth and other planets, and read their description through NASA's photo gallery, and star gaze at night through his telescope to learn about comets and gravity. He will attend a regular Community Gardens group, and learn about plants and soil, and start his own vegetable garden. He will also occasionally conduct science experiments, involving any interests he has at the time in the aim to learn through demonstration. This will enable J to expand on his ability to connect Science with the real world and I will continue to provide guidance for any further interests he develops in this subject.


The internet, NASA photo gallery, computer, books, magazines, documentaries, conversation, telescope, experimental materials, and gardening materials.


Searching imageson the internet and NASA's photo gallery, reading the photo's description to learn what it means, conducting experiments, gardening, star gazing with a telescope, discussions, reading Science related books, and watching documentaries.

History and SOSE

J will continue to explore the environment around him, and a range of history-related topics that may spark his interest, through visits to museums, Art galleries, discussions, and travelling. We have already visited a number of small towns and their museums nearby, and plan to visit more in the future. J will continue to watch documentaries, which can provide a lot of information regarding different cultures around the world. He enjoys looking at maps, and learning about other states and countries, and the different types of terrain and climates. He has also expressed a natural curiosity about the history of man-kind and evolution, and we will continue to explore this further through discussions, documentaries and books. I will continue to provide guidance for any further interests he develops in this area.


Documentaries, books, atlas, Museums and Art galleries, Google Maps, discussion.


Visiting Museums and Art galleries, travelling, watching documentaries, having discussions, reading books, looking at maps in an atlas, and on Google Maps.


J is extremely athletic. He enjoys sprinting activities, riding his bike,jumping on the trampoline and ball activities. He will continue to use his strengths through exercises around the home, as well as sporting activities outside the home. He will be joining a Gymnastics club in the New Year, to enhance and perform his trampoline skills, and possibly athletics later in the year. We will continue our regular outings to the beach, and several pools, where he enjoys swimming and boogie-boarding, as well as our regular meet-ups with our Homeschooling group for leisurely activities such as tennis. J will also be taken on camping trips, where we will undertake climbing and bushwalking, and use open spaced grounds for exercising sprinting games. J has a general understanding of physical health, and practices good eating habits on a daily basis. He understands the concept behind calories in versus calories out, and is aware of what causes weight gain and weight loss, and other general ailments. He shows interest in tv shows that discuss medical problems and procedures, as well as mental health, and I will continue to encourage and demonstrate healthy behaviors in the form of cooking and exercise, as I believe it will be beneficial to J's understanding in this subject and I will continue to provide guidance for any further interests he develops in this area.


Trampoline, sporting equipment such as soccer ball, racket and ball, hiking tracks, Gymnastics club, pushbike, public pools, beaches, playgrounds, ovals, tennis equipment, healthy ingredients for cooking, television.


Jumping on the trampoline, bike riding, climbing, hiking, swimming, boogie-boarding, cooking and preparing food, tennis, Gymnastics, Athletics, sprinting, exercising, discussions, watching health-related TV shows.


J is very interested in this area, and continues to demonstrate his vast knowledge in computers and video games on a daily basis. He is familiar with the Windows operating system, file system and uses a variety of programs like 'Modio' and 'Usbexplorer' to extract and modify game saves on his Xbox360. He will continue to actively search out information and tutorials online using'YouTube' and 'Google' to add to the knowledge base he has developed, to find solutions and overcome technical problems by following complicated instructions. He has also expressed an interest in video editing, and I will provide him with the necessary tools and resources he needs to pursue this further. We will support J in this subject as he continues to show interest, as his father is currently undertaking a Diploma in Interactive and Digital Games, which I believe can benefit J immensely in this area. I will continue to provide guidance for any further interests he develops in this subject.


Internet, computer, video games, usb memory sticks, digital camera, notes from his father's studies.


Extracting, modifying and re-inserting game saves, using search engines to seek tutorials, and then following their instructions, using a digital camera to transfer images/videos onto a computer, then editing them, navigating file systems, playing computer/video games.

The Arts

J has been reluctant in the past to explore this subject, however in the last six months he has shown an increased interest in artistic activities such as drawing, design and music. He will be encouraged to explore this further through playing his guitar, listening to music, and add to his portfolio collection of computer and video game maps and drawings he has designed, and he enjoys computer games which involve designing and creating large buildings and structures. He is also interested in scrapbooking and photography,and he will be starting this in the New Year, preparing his own photos and descriptions of his everyday life and activities into a scrapbook, in a layout of his choice. J is not particularly interested in Drama or Dance at this stage, but I will continue to offer a range of activities that support this, such as Drama and Dance classes. I will continue to demonstrate the benefits of emotion and creativity through The Arts, in the aim to help J have a better understanding of expressions of real-life experiences. I will continue to provide guidance for any further interests he develops in this subject.


Art supplies such as paints, pencils, felts, glue or sticky tape,several designs and textures of paper, binders, digital camera, computer, iPod, guitar, scrapbooks, and computer/video games.


Designing and drawing or painting maps and logos, playing guitar, listening to music, taking photos, printing photos, gluing photos into a scrapbook and adding titles or descriptions, displaying pieces in a portfolio.


J is currently not learning a foreign language, but it has been brought to his attention and he is interested in pursuing this in the near future. The language of his choice has not yet been decided.

Social Opportunities

J is and will continue to be exposed to a variety of social opportunities in his day to day life. We have recently joined a Homeschooling group, and this has allowed J to meet a variety of people of all ages, and engage in several activities working and playing with small or large groups. He will attend a community gardens weekly, an all ages' playgroup fortnightly, tennis lessons fortnightly, and group meetings at the library and local playgrounds. He will also attend regular group events atamusement parks, and join a gymnastics club in the New Year. J has already made several connections and his social network will only expand due to the growing contact with this group. He will continue visits with friends outside of the Homeschooling group, as well as his Grandparents who visit occasionally. J enjoys the company of his siblings and this has strengthened his relationships with family. I will continue to encourage this, as well as ample social opportunities outside of the home.
