Home Educating Mum Designs Maths Board Game by Beverley Paine, August 2018 Narelle Slater was a home schooling mum who home educated her three daughters from Grade 5, 7 & 9 respectively, now aged in their 30s. To help them learn maths she invented a Mathematical Boardgame, remembering how she struggled with maths right throughout my her years of schooling. Her maths game has been featured in Upon In House Reviews the Education Departments of Western Australia and on the Queensland Education Departments Resource Lists. After home educating her children Narelle went on to complete 3 years Nursing Training and her daughters completed TAFE diplomas in their chosen fields. Narelle says that $.M.A.D. Board Game is an exciting way to learn subtraction, multiplication, addition and division skills. Designed for all ages can play together yet be on equal terms. There are different options that allow for different lengths of playing time. It's also "an innovative way to learn those 'tiresome' times tables". Similar in some areas to Monopoly, though instead of Real Estate, the children learn the basic building blocks of mathematics while at the same time learn simple money handling skills. "The game has been designed, by utilising certain components within the game, so that winning is due to chance, not mathematical prowess. This enables those mathematically challenged to enjoy playing the game whilst learning these skills," says Narelle, adding that the game enables parents to lead and teach effectively, "as whilst playing, they can very quickly see any weaknesses in both maths and interpersonal relationships and correct them just as easily". Good game design stresses interpersonal relationship skills. "Transactions within the game are important, and the child soon learns the importance of turn taking, to act politely and efficiently". Narelle found that her children and their friends were keen and eager to play the game, more so because they are not being judged on their ability whilst they are learning. The game provided a great way to learn, still by rote but with an emphasis having fun. The game is available from Narelle - email narelles latter@gma il.com (remove spaces to use email address). Welcome to the World of Home Education We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine
